Buehrer Appointment to BWC Was Smart Political Move for John Kasich

Today's announcement that State Senator Stephen Buehrer will lead Ohio's Bureau of Worker's Compensation is one of the first smart political moves by Governor Elect John Kasich.  To begin with, Buehrer is a staunch conservative and he's not afraid to criticize a fellow Republican from the right.  But more importantly, Buehrer's appointment helped stave off friction in the Senate over leadership elections.

Tom Niehaus, Keith Faber, and Steve Buehrer had all sought to replace Bill Harris as Senate President.  But by this summer Niehaus had already sown up the seat.  Knowing this, Faber and Buehrer then both sought to serve as the Senate President Pro Tem, the second highest position in the Senate currently held by Niehaus.  Appointing Buehrer to the BWC stops this unnecessary leadership fight between two close supporters of John Kasich.

Naming Buehrer, a lawyer, to the BWC is also a plum appointment.  Kasich and Buehrer will likely push privatization and/or major changes to this agency.  This is also the spot where Buehrer started his career in public service.
