Dear
colleagues,
Over the
last week, lawyers and judges throughout the United States and elsewhere have
shown their support for the rule of law in Pakistan and throughout the world
by calling attention to the suspension of the Pakistani national constitution
and the arrest and detention of lawyers and judges. Events last week included
rallies held in Cleveland, sponsored by the Cleveland Bar Association, and in
Akron, sponsored by Akron Bar Association and the University of Akron Law
School.
This
Wednesday, November 14 at noon, the lawyers of Ohio will have an opportunity
to express their support for the rule of law at a rally at the Statehouse in
Columbus (near the McKinley Monument on High Street between Broad & State Streets) organized by the Columbus Bar Association. The Columbus rally will
be held concurrently with similar events around the country, including a
march in Washington, D.C., planned by the American Bar Association.
The OSBA
applauds the efforts of the American Bar Association, Columbus Bar Association, Cleveland Bar Association, Akron Bar Association and others in displaying support for lawyers and judges in Pakistan who are fighting to
preserve and protect the rule of law and judicial independence. Further, the
events in Pakistan should cause us to reflect on the absence of the rule of
law and basic civil liberties in many countries around the world and the
imperative that we speak out for these fundamental principles of justice. The
OSBA encourages lawyers in Ohio to join their colleagues in support of these
principles at the rally in Columbus and at other events across Ohio.
Sincerely,
Rob Ware
President
Ohio State Bar Association
