The Pullins Report - Keeping Tabs on Ohio Business and Government: Coughlin Sponsors Plan to Identify Sexual Predators
Coughlin Sponsors Plan to Identify Sexual Predators
COLUMBUS—State
Senator Kevin Coughlin (R-Cuyahoga Falls) last week introduced Senate Bill 56,
legislation to require the use of fluorescent green license plates on vehicles
of registered sex offenders. Today, Representative Michael DeBose (D-Cleveland)
introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.
“A distinctive license plate would warn parents
and children of the potential threat posed by sexual offenders,” Coughlin
said.“This is one more protection that
the State of Ohio can offer to families and communities as they seek to shield their
children and keep them out of harm’s way”
The two legislators participated in a Statehouse
press conference today where they were joined by Summit County Sheriff Drew
Alexander as well as a number of proponents from across the state. Sheriff
Alexander talked about the importance of the legislation to law enforcement
efforts.
“The Summit County Sheriff’s Office fully
endorses this legislation,” Alexander said. “Being able to identify sex
offenders in their vehicles will not only provide law enforcement with a better
tool to track these heinous criminals, it will give Ohio families a greater
piece of mind knowing that their children will be able to recognize where this
danger exists.”
“The florescent green license plate will make
the most egregious sex offenders easily identifiable,” DeBose said.“Currently, these individuals are required to
register with the sheriff and are prohibited from living within 1,000 ft of a
school.The florescent green plate is
another necessary safeguard.”
It is important to note that the legislation
would allow sex offenders to petition the court for the removal of the
fluorescent green license plates after a period of five years.
