Ohio Republicans Need To Do Some Soul Searching
Admitting that we as a party have a major problem is the first step. We must admit that we wasted the opportunity that we were given in 1994.
Voters gave us that opportunity, first of all, because of the corruption of Ohio Democrats. But like the piggies in Animal Farm we became even worse.
Our two governors, our senate presidents, our house speakers, even our other statewides, many times acted like they were more important than the President of the United States. Much of it I blame on their staffs, but I also blame them too.
The list of the arrogance goes on. The Senate Pro Tem from Dayton who actually lives in Bexley. The House Speaker from Dayton who lives in a high rise condo in downtown Columbus. The former speaker that had a driver pick him up and take him home from the statehouse. The former governor that ranted at an air traffic controller because he wouldn't let his plane take off. The 20 something freshmen house members, not yet sworn in, that are already running for house speaker. And on, and on, and on.
Setting the issues of taxes and spending and all of that aside, we all need to do some soul searching about the reasons we first came to power and why we lost it. If we don't, Democrats will be running Ohio for a long time.

You make several good points Scott -- but maybe we ought to point some fingers at Mr. Bennett who decided it was better for the R's to hold and collect as many office s as possible without primaries, real debate of the issues, and doing anything of real substance shy of taking care of all the special interests. Was the guy getting some kind of incentive bonus for electing R's that are incapable of real leadership. I mean -- come on -- who needs Jeanette Bradley? We give her offices that she can't earn on her own (in the name of Republican diversity) and wonder why she can't hold on to them. I am a believer of survival of the fittest -- both for people and ideas. But we stopped being the party of real people and real ideas.
With Strickland's Veto he shows he's a man of action and about change -- that is what the people want -- the R's could have passed this bill anytime over the last 3 years that it looked like litigation would be coming -- stupidly they wait until Xmas eve -- the result is their incompetent tactics make it look like another pay for play game to protect the special interests by slipping the bill in at the last minute. Instead -- we're afraid of a public debate of the righteousness or simple good sense of letting lawyers enrich themselves on and large muni's extorting funds from paint manufacturers for lead paint that hasn't been produced in over 40 years. Strickland and the D's tactics will continue to win the day until we convince the public that we have something real to say, that our arguments are honest, dripping with integrity, and free from the self-serving drivel that we have been espousing over the last 2 years as Taft & Co lead the party down the drain.
